Here is what chamber member Andy Peterson says about ordinance 42.
Councilor Russ Stover’s plan to marry the city’s ability to attract new business, new development and new business expansion to an almost guaranteed unionization of those businesses – all in the name of helping the poorest of workers. What Councilor Stover forgets is by aiming his intentions at those businesses that might receive “public subsidies,” he could effectively kill job creation. Had Cirrus Design and United Health Care worked with the city under such agreements they would not have chosen to locate in Duluth. This is not to say that the city should not be careful when it enters into an agreement nor should it throw money at businesses just to attract jobs; but I am certain that under Councilor Stover’s plan, neither business would have located in Duluth.
Under Councilor Stover’s plan, the city would have lost approximately two thousand good jobs.Councilor Stover’s plan, then, is not visionary.In Councilor Stover’s defense, it is safe to say that he has a heart for the less fortunate. Like the rest of us, he wants to see people receive health care, have proper housing, and get a good education. Unfortunately, his plan accomplishes these things at someone else’s expense – that of the business community’s ability to expand and provide jobs.
By requiring any business that might receive any city help – including the provision of infrastructure – to allow unions free and unfettered access to organizing, he almost assuredly guarantees that employees join unions without so much as an employee’s ability to a secret ballot. What citizen in the US would tolerate such treatment when he or she employs his or her right to vote in any public election? These kinds of “open” elections are subject to inordinate union pressure and ultimately will take away the employers’ ability to shop around for the best price and best value in insurance for their employees.Lastly, if Councilor Stover wants to help the working poor, he should be sure to fund the non-profits of our area, as they work to change social policy and provide services. This might include making sure that those who are mildly disabled, emotionally disturbed, or those addicted to drugs or alcohol get the real help and assistance they need.In an era when the city faces great financial challenges, is a thinly disguised plan to promote union membership really the answer? We think not.Tell Councilor Stover and the rest of the city council what you think.
Let him know you don’t appreciate him serving as a voice box for union efforts. Time is short – the council reads ordinance 06-042-O tonight in preparation to vote it into law at the next council meeting. Tell them to come up with a better plan. Mr. Peterson and I don't always agree, we do on this one. Even when we don't I have the utmost respect for Mr. Peterson along with Mr. Ross.
The chamber it's self I don't agree with all the time either but they are a class act, on how people of "power" should act. Maybe Mr. Welty could take a lesson from them.

This is an email reply from Harry Welty, candidate for the U.S. Congress in the 8th district. He is running against long time democrat Jim Oberstar and former Congressman and senator Rod Grams.

With that kind of money I'd raise hell about our national debt and the politization of the war in Iraq. These are decent kids facing death for a war that has weakened America and put us at risk. Look how pathetic we have been dealing with Iran and North Korea. Look at what we've done to the National Guard.

Lets be honestly here we are talking about hotels and motels, you are not going to make a whole lot of money working in these places unless you own it or are in a high position. It is unfair to make a business pay x amount other then the current minimum wage to start. The company then gives you pay increases based on the job you are doing.
I am all for getting something for my tax dollar but it is not making unionizing easy that I want. What I would love was ordinance 60 that laid out a clear plan for both the city and the developer.

Crime in Duluth
What to do about crime in Duluth.
The fact is there is a number of things that could be done. I have the greatest respect for our police and they need all the equiment and essentials needed to battle this issue. This is something we need to focus on and we need to let our city council members well aware of this. The budget talks are going on now and we need to make it clear that police and fire is top priority not other programs. That is just one step but it is a very important step that needs to take place.
Second, develop community meetings were there are not and were there are try to get more involvement. With community input and involvement we will make this community better. We need to be part of the solution not the problem, we all can be added ears and eyes in the area we live. Also take a lead in developing a crime watch program in your area of town.
third, We don't affine suggest more government programs. This would not be a new program but it would be increasing and extending a city department. Increase the city parks and rec to allow rec centers to be a safe place for kids together and play and hang out.
We can remember a time when the rec centers all over town were full of kids everyday, rec centers had programs all day long, they would have out door activities, crafts and arts, along with many other events that took place after school and in the summer. Along with extensive winter programs as well. We remember times when the rec centers would go down to Twins games, go on fishing trip and other trips. Along with just outstanding activities on site.
This is just part of a grand program to start to take back our streets.

What is the issue.
Councilor Russ Stover has ordinance 42, the ordinannce would make it easy to unionize.
Councilor Stover and a local citizen have been going back and forth on this issue on what truely is the issue. Councilor Stover claims the issue is the subsidies and not that unionzing. The citizen claims that he is just trying to mislead the public by using subsidies as an argument.
It looks to us here that the citizen is right but we have alot to look over and will pass it along as we can. The email were passed on to us. Again more to come.

It's time to take back our streets.
Crime has been on the rise in Duluth, why? Because of people coming from the twin cities along with else were.
The crimes that are up, are not small ones they are major crimes. These crimes have been linked with a drug increase as well as a gang in crease in Duluth.

Council meeting
The Duluth city council will meet tonight. They normally meet on Monday night however with columbis day yesterday the meeting will be held tonight.
The meeting is very importain to attend tonights council meeting because councilor Stover will introduce an ordinance that will make it easy to put in unions.

Stover wants it to be easy for unions to move in.
Duluth City Councilor Russ Stover has said he along with the unions will introduce an ordinance that makes it easy to organize a union. What this ordinance will do is by pass all the campaigning for or against a union and allow the workers to vote on a card and if a margity of those vote to have a union that is it.

New look at some of the races
I think now that some republicans could be in trouble with the events of the sex scandal that put down Foley. Foley a representative that sent private messages and instant messages to a child.
First the Governors race
I still thing that Tim Pawlenty will win. It will be a close race however.

The rest split between other candidates. Also look for Lourey to get some votes because her supports will not give up.

Teachers to carry guns in School?
A republican lawmaker has proposed that teachers and principals could carry guns. This after a threat that kid had a gun in a school.

Why are school crimes getting more out of control.
Yesterday there was a group of us at an event that held a discussion about this type of an issue. One of our group members said her son told her that at East High school yes right here in Duluth you could get anything you wanted to. You could get a gun, knife, drugs, sex, whatever you wanted you could get it, if you knew the "right people".

EVELETH - Eveleth Police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating a school violence threat reportedly to be carried out by a 17-year-old male.
At about 8 p.m. Monday, Eveleth-Gilbert Superintendent Mike Lang reported that a student at Eveleth-Gilbert schools had received an internet message at the student's home describing a plan to kill Eveleth students, according to an Eveleth Police Department news release.
The message said the incident would occur on Oct 13, but did not specify at which Eveleth-Gilbert campus.
The student who reportedly received the message had notified school authorities.
As the result of an investigation, law enforcement authorities identified a suspect who admitted to sending the message.
The 17-year-old suspect has no reported current or past affiliation with Eveleth-Gilbert schools, according to Eveleth Police Chief Brian Lillis.
``At this point in the investigation, it does not appear that the suspect poses an imminent threat to public safety,' said Lillis. ``It appears that it is unlikely that the suspect has either the intention or the ability to carry out the purported school violence at the Eveleth-Gilbert schools.'
The Chisholm and Gilbert Police department assisted in the investigation.

Don Ness gets praise from some.
Duluth City Councilor Don Ness has received some praise this week from people he normally would not receive it from. At least it seems, Erik at http://almostontherange.blogspot.com, you will have to register an account if you have not done so yet.
Okay here we go with my comments and they will not be much praise for the councilor.
First, Lets set the record straight Don Ness does what he feels is best for his political future. He has heard from a number of Duluthains that they don't and or can't pay for a utility increase. Therefore it is best for him to take action, not because he wants to but because he has to, so he looks good.
Yet another point to the Unions will now be at Don Ness for a short time and we will see if he flips back the other way. I don't think he will he is normally good at "standing" for what is best for him.
Second, A resolution does nothing. This discussing took place in city council chambers back when we were discussing ordinance 60. A resolutions holds no water, it is only ordinance that bind the council. A resolutions is just a suggestion. It does not need to help up.

Come on Rush.
I listened to Rush's show today, and was amaszed at his attempt to support Foley.
I normaly agree with Rush but this time disagree 100% at this point. Sham on Rush for playing the political game with this issue. I know Rush says the Democrats are playing a game and maybe they are, but Rush jumped into it doing the same exact thing.
I can see standing up for the speaker of the house, but I can't stand behind foley at all.
Rush said that he thinks it is an attack of the media and far left wing nuts and the foley is insent, but the fact is that this is not true. Even if it is in part an attack what Foley has done is in excuseable.
Rush every republican action is not right. This is one of those.

Twins lose game one.
The Minnesota Twins lost game one of the ALDS, today at the metrodome. The Twins got behind Oakland early in the second inning by two from there Oakland never looked back as they went on to win 3-2. Game two tomorrow and it is a must win for the Twins tomorrow.

Fink signs going going and gone.
I hope people have noticed that commissnor Dennise Fink has been working hard to his re-election. He has as always been out door knocking as well as had radio ads and of course signs. That brings up a great point about his signs.
Dennise Fink signs have been going up fast but for as fast as they go they come down, why? Fank Jewells camp has an effort to try to make it look like Fink has little support. They are out taking the Fink signs. Fink has lost a record number of signs to this point.
The effort by the Jewell camp is a piss poor attempt to make it look like Fink support is low, Frank will find that to be anything but the case in November.
The signs are going missing in high profile places and the Jewell signs are not I wonder why?

More on the political races.
U.S. Congress 8th district.
There are three candidates running for the 8th district.
The democrat is a long time congressman, he has never faces a hard challange this time he may. Oberstar in his earlyer years did a lot for this area, however it is a what have you done latly issue with me. For at least last 10 years congressman Oberstar has done little to improve this district.
With that said however, we feel the district will still have strong support for the do nothing congressman.
One of the two challangers is running under his own party, unity party candidate Harry Welty. Mr. Welty served on the Duluth school board and is well known around Duluth however other then that not sure how well known he is in the district. With the district being large and his lack of effort out side of the Duluth it will be hard for him to get much support. We believe that money could be an issue he as well. We don't know the facts of Mr. Welty's camp but we guess he has little money compared to Oberstar and Grams.
Welty does however have some very interesting thoughts about both candidates on his web site , he also has very interesting thoughts of the day along with some other info. Welty offers a chose for those who are sick of far left and far right ideas if you believe the two party candidates represent that.

Grams and Oberstar both have extensive political records to stand. Well Welty has some thing to stand on it is not anything close to what Grams and Oberstars experinse is. If you think about that however this maybe a good thing.

The democrat is a long time congressman, he has never faces a hard challange this time he may. Oberstar in his earlyer years did a lot for this area, however it is a what have you done latly issue with me. For at least last 10 years congressman Oberstar has done little to improve this district.
With that said however, we feel the district will still have strong support for the do nothing congressman.
One of the two challangers is running under his own party, unity party candidate Harry Welty. Mr. Welty served on the Duluth school board and is well known around Duluth however other then that not sure how well known he is in the district. With the district being large and his lack of effort out side of the Duluth it will be hard for him to get much support. We believe that money could be an issue he as well. We don't know the facts of Mr. Welty's camp but we guess he has little money compared to Oberstar and Grams.
Welty does however have some very interesting thoughts about both candidates on his web site , he also has very interesting thoughts of the day along with some other info. Welty offers a chose for those who are sick of far left and far right ideas if you believe the two party candidates represent that.

A little look into some of the races.
Here is how we see some of the political races going down.
Governors Race:
The republicans are out saying the Pawlenty is the most fiscial conservitive governor in some time. You must decide for your self if that is true to you or not. He has done some good things and of course some things many people don't like. With that said we don't believe he has pissed of a huge number of people. Othere then the ones that would not vote for him from day one.
The democrates picked to run some one very contifersil even in there own party. Mike Hatch has done some very odd things to put it nicely as he has been in goverment. He will get a lot of the democrate vote but will not see a lot of cross over from indepentends or republicans.
Jess's party:
I have came to call the Minnesota indepentins party Jess's party. They are running a wacko in Peter Hutichison. This guy to us is farther left then most far left democrats, and may take votes away from Hatch.
We did not give Peter much of a chance to have a good showing but now with Jess backing him and asking the young dumb voters to vote for him he should have an okay showing.

A Duluth woman that was missing and later founder was hiding because of some issues she had with her money.
Mrs. Fry who I knew and never let on that she was having any trouble when I would see her, seemed to have some demands that she could not over come.
Fry the missing woman here a little bit back was found about a week or so ago and she was in good condition but had no or little money.
A story in yesterdays Duluth News Tribune said that she was hiding from creditors that were calling her for payments. She could not pay so she thought she would leave her apartment. When she did she would also leave her car with the thinking if she left everything the creditors would take it and there would be nothing left for them to take.
She would take shelter in a shed on London road,and would eat scraps she could find sometime stopping at a fast food location.
Here debt was because of places that would give you an advance on your payroll check and you then pay them back with very high interest. She had apparently done this many times and was in such a hole she could not claim out of it.
These type of places are very dangers and she is just one of many who got caught up in this scam. Lets call it what it is.

Duluth Human rights office to close?
As many of you may know, Duluth mad man and Mayor Herb Bergson has said he will not fund the Duluth human rights office. There for the will close. The reason given is the unfunded health care liability.
I agree with the mayor on this on. There is no need to have a Duluth office that State already handles these issues. I believe that we (Duluth) is the only city in Minnesota to have a separate office at least five years ago when we were debating the issue we were.

Please what a poor excuse for this group to use. You can't tell that our city programs along with State EBT and such minority's will stop coming to the HELP city and state of the world!!!! What a joke. It also will not at all shut the door on the minority's already here.
In nearly five years of existence, the office has lost its only court case. But success is better measured by the number of complaints that are worked out before hitting the legal system, proponents say.
Mayor Herb Bergson has proposed cutting the office and its two staff members as a way to balance next year's budget. Twenty-seven jobs are on the chopping block in various departments, although that number will be met mostly through vacancies and retirements.
But supporters said news of the Human Rights Office's demise is premature.

City Councilor Greg Gilbert said the office's budget is small and he expects the necessary budget money to surface somewhere before the council finalizes a 2007 budget in December.
"I do not want to close the office," Gilbert said.
See we told you, the council is nothing but bleeding hart wacko's. Gilbert, Johnson, Ness, Stover, Reinert the list goes on.
Bergson said he doesn't have a poor opinion of the office or its personnel, but believes the Minnesota State Human Rights Office can take over many of its functions.
Very well said. I don't think it is anyone has a poor opioion of the office, however some feel there was and still is not need for it. The State does a good job of handling these issues, when they arise.
But members of the volunteer Human Rights Commission and staff say complaints would slow to a trickle without an office in Duluth.
Again just an attempt to play the feel sorry for us card.

Frank Jewell
He is of course running against a long time commissioner. What does Jewell have to stand on? His record of anti-military speaks for it's self. His work or lack of work record speaks for it's self. Having never had a real job. Frank has only worked in government or non-profits all of his life. Well commissioner Fink has worked in the private sector for many years.
Frank was however on the Duluth city council, there however he was only a one term councilor. He was defeated by the youngest councilor at the time to ever sit on the board Chris Dalhberg. Why was Jewell a one time councilor, his lack of a record and lack of getting things accomplished.
The only thing he seemed to do when on the city council was going ahead and do nothing about city's retiree health care.

Coast Guard live fire update.
There are some that seem to think the mad mayor is or was right to be pissed about the live fire that took place on Lake Superior.
We have received many comments that we chose not to post. The comments made by these people were out rages and had uncalled for words in the post there for they did not get approved but other then that there are still other's that agree with the mad mayor.
I don't care if you do or not but remember is you chose to write a comment about this post then do it with some respect to everyone. If you don't then it will not be on this blog.
Anyway back to the point. Dave Walter who filled in for Brad yesterday on KDAL agrees with the Mayor saying at very least it gives the public the chance to voice there concerns. Remember there was already a open comment period were there was little comments from anyone.
It also seems like Dave was saying that he did not agree with the live fires. A caller called him on this and Dave said that is not what he said. However it sure seems like that is what Dave was in fact saying.
Dave and others sure seem to not like the military and believe we should not take every procostion to be safe.

Why can't we do something like this.
SILVER BAY - As all-terrain vehicle riders traveled along a rocky, dusty trail on the edge of Silver Bay on Friday, they passed signs pointing to the city's AmericInn Lodge & Suites, a restaurant and other lodging.
Placement of the commercial signs among tall pine and birch trees might seem odd. But ATV recreation is big business.
Nearly 300 ATV riders are expected in Silver Bay this weekend for the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota fall convention. As of Friday, more than 230 were pre-registered.
The Mayor talks about bringing money into the community, yet he and the Duluth Police along with other community leaders feel ATV's are evil. Duluth and the areas around don't allow for ATV use, or the use is very limetted.
Yet our Mayor believe is good policy to support a gay pride fest. Again as I have said many time I have nothing against the gay community, I don't believe however the city should sponsor this type of an event. Not only that but many things that happened this year were more the questionable.
If the city wants to have great events sponsor something like this ATV event.

It was a inter city football battle Saturday night at PSS. It pit two teams thought to be contenters in there confrence. Duluth Central and Duluth Denfeld.

The game was being broadcast as Duluth Centrals toughtest game and biggest challange. Yet the game was anything but that. Duluth Central won 27-0 and improved to 3- 0 as Denfeld drops to 1-2. It looks clear that central will run away with there confrence. Yes it is early in the season but remember the season is also short, not only that but central has out scored there oppents 115- 21 in three games. It is at least something close to that I don't have the numbers in front of me, but that is close anyway.

Mad Man.
Our very own mad man is at it again. Yes Mayor Bergson shows his anti-America colors again.
Mayor Bergson believes hs above homeland sercuity and the U.S. Coast Guard. Bergson believes rhe live fire practice rounds shot off by the Coast Guard Tuesday was very upsetting.
His consern is that the shot would harm the lake or someone would get hurt he also thought (wrongly) that the live fire would not happen tell aftmer more public hrearing took place that was never to be the case.
Yes there was going to be more public hearing thanks to Congressman Oberstar and company. With that said the life fire was still going to take place even when these meeting were going on.
We will have more on this later we are getting some story's ready.

From what we are hearing to this point on the judge race is this.
It appears that the little story about Tim Little has had little effect on the election. In fact it seems like more people got mad that the paper ran the story and wanted to make an issue out it.
The race however still seems to be close at this point. We expect Tim Little will advance however to the November election.
By the way does anyone know if anyone is having party tonight if so were and when. We will post them if people would like to attend them.

I can tell you that voting was very very slow this morning all over town from reports. Most voting areas only had about 40 people vote early in the morning about to 9 am.
My polling place was very slow. When I voted this morning I was the 37th person to vote.
Voting seemed to pick up some over the lunch hours of the day. Most places saw a numbers increase from 11-1, then again it died down.
Hope fully there will be another big increase on the drive home. Voting looks to low in most places. The turn out to this point does not look like it will be very high.
This is good for the DFL and unions as it is more then likely there supporters getting out.

Today we remember.
Today of course marks the 5th year of the bombing of 9/11. When two plans flew into the world trade center. One into the pentagon, and a third crashed in a Pennisivania land. The third plan was headed for the White House.
We ask that everyone remember this day and that you never forget the people died that day.

In the story City attorney and council attorney said Little should not have voted based on the MEDIA reports that he has read.

It looks like some people don't believe the Hatch Swanson sign together is a big deal.
It seems like some don't believe that the Hatch Swanson signs being put up together is a big deal.
Yet the fact is it is for a few reason
1. We can't seem to get a straight reply from anyone on why this is happening.
2. In talks with people it is, that people ask for a Hatch sign and they get both weather they want them or not. Is this not then an endorsement. Yest Hatch said he would not endorse anyone and there is more info to come later on this aspect.
3. Why here and no were else, it is odd at best.

Hatch Swanson sign update # 355 I think.
Okay for what it is worth. I saw to signs for just Hatch the other day along Superior Street out in lakeside. I had seen one guy out side and I stopped and chatted with him.
DP: I see you have a Hatch sign.
Guy: Yeah
DP: Did you receive a Swanson sign at the same time.
Guy: Yes I took it down, so did my friend .
DP: How come?
Guy: We did not want the Swanson sign and are not supporting her for A.G.
DP: Why do you think you got both signs
Guy: I don't know.
That was the gist of the conversation. The guy was not happy about getting both signs. I don't why this is happening in Duluth and no were else.
I wonder if it would ever change any one minds on who they would vote for? I don't think it would but you never know.

4th street market sold.
A long time central hillside market is sold. Little John's 4th street market has been sold to new owners. It will however stay a market which is very good. The area of town needs a grocery store for it's residents that live in the area.
The new owners have renamed the store Ma and Pop's and look to add new items as they are able to. The new owners have said they will add a section dedicated to black hair care products, along with expanding the movie rental and deli items.
Just for the record we here at DP don't like the new name. What are you to do however, we wish they would have just kept it 4th street market. It already has a huge backing.
We do wish the new owners the best of luck and we will continue to stop in at the store ever now and again. We always went into the 4th street market on the way downtown or something like that.

Citizens blog.
It looks like citizens blog is considering a format change.
The format change would limit what you talk about on the blog to topics they choose.
I don't like the idea at all. One of the great things with the blog was you could post about almost anything local. Now for some reason they want to limit that. I loved the blog for the views it expressed by all. It did not matter if you agreed with the person or not.
Even on this blog we have said many times if there is something you would like to bring up just ask us we will post and you can comment on it.

Duluth police to use ATV's
We are in agreement with almost on the Range blog about this issue.
ATV's to cut down crime right? Okay Duluth has a crime problem yet they don't seem to care. What are they wasting there time on? Cracking down on ATV use in Morgan Park and those area's of town. These areas of town have people using ATV's, yes it is illegal to use them in town. However it should not be the biggest issue our police department deals with.
They had to use ATV's last weekend from the DNR and the State to do a string operation on ATV use. It is now our hope that the department does not get the bright idea to buy ATV's for department use. The money they should spent on real crime problems.

Have to get my Little sign.
I was not going to get a yard sign for Tim Little for judge. I will now because of the story in the DNT read comments in post below.

Why does this story apprear in today's paper? The story basically asking if Tim Little has a conflict of interest in the gambling report investigation on Bergson.
It seems now that city councilor Little may have had a relationship with the second highest paid worker for the gambling council.
Okay here is the thing, when you read the story they talk about that he voted for the grants for gambling council well he was in a relationship with the vice president of the gambling council. What effects does this have on the investigation of the state report? Simple nothing.
The fact that he had a relationship with the vice president of the gambling council means maybe at best he should not have voted on the councils grant. With that said I don't have a major problem with him voting or not voting on the grants. If this is a conflict at all you must look at the big picture here and ask your self something.
The questions that needs to be asked is this, do I believe that the city council has members that may have conflicts of interest? My answer is yes. The biggest being councilor Johnson. She has a conflict with the unions and the city deals with union issues all the time much more then they will ever with the gambling council.

Why does it seem as if no candidate cares about the northern part of the state?
Okay yes the candidates may have made an appearance up here, but lets call it what it is. The appearance is just a token visit to pretend that they care about the northern part of the state.
Ever candidate is doing all or most there campainging in the cities. It makes us sick.

Duluth finest pot part 1.
Okay so a Duluth News Tribune along with some other reportes found pot in flowers pots out side of the West Duluth station.
The Duluth Police is saying that the front door of the west duluth station is locked most of the time and the officers that use the station go in the back so there is no way they would have known about the pot in the front.
They also atribute the issue to a joker. That maybe true however I find a real problem with this story and that the police and city staff saying they did not know about the pot growning in the planters.
Some one must go out and check on these things. don't they?

As many of you may have guessed we hear at Duluth Politics have sent out our share fair of emails about issues. When we do only a few reply. The councilors that are very good at responding are as follows.
City councilor Stauber, Little, Stewart, Krause and Ness the other's never reply or rarely. Here are the councilors that never reply. Councilors Stover, Gilbert. Here are the other two don't reply affine and those would be Johnson and Reinert.
We don't make many phone calls but people tell us much of the same happens, when you make a phone call.

Here is the latest on the Hatch Swanson signs in Duluth.
A reliable source has told me this is going on in Duluth because the local DFLers (at least a large amount) want Swanson to be the A.G.. This is why they are making it look like Hatch is endorsing Swanson.

Okay yes I know it is illegal to use ATV's such as four wheelers in the city limits. I understand it is for safety of all and there are other issue with noise and such invalued as well.
With that said am I the only one that finds this funny?
In response to the continuous, though seldom addressed, problem of illegal ATV use in the city, the Duluth Police Department teamed up with the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Saturday to patrol trails and streets in western Duluth areas, searching for violators.
It's something Duluth police don't get to do, said Lt. John Beyer, mainly because the department itself doesn't own any ATVs for officers to use out on the trails.
For Saturday's enforcement sweep, the DNR pitched in five ATVs, and the sheriff's office lent one.
It is illegal to ride ATVs or similar vehicles on city streets, trails or other property. Violating the ordinance means the rider must appear in St. Louis County Court and pay a fine, Beyer said.
Officers issued at least six citations through Saturday evening while patrolling the trails, Beyer said. They focused on known ATV hot spots in the Smithsville, Morgan Park, Gary-New Duluth, Norton Park and Fond du Lac neighborhoods. A mix of private and public land, plus easy access to city trails makes for a tempting combination for some ATV riders.
It seems like if you are a cop you can do what ever you want even if it is breaking the law. Yes they enforce the law, however even if some think it they are not the law. I guess the way I see if the law should be able to be broke to caught people in this case.
What could be done to stop this? It seems like many times people have to cross a road, then what could be done is have a cop sitting waiting for these people and stop them there. Set up blocks, most trails are at some point either start or end of a trial are wide enough to put a cop car there.
When some one calls 911 send a cop out to the spot and stop it. Enforce the law in a legal way.

Remembering Paul Antonich.
10 years ago tomorrow Paul was kidnapped and then brutally beat to death after a very small fender bender on 6th Ave and 9th street.
Paul Antonich a classmate and fried of mine. I miss Paul with all my hart. No one knows what many of close to Paul felt the day after his senseless death.
Paul was a great kid, he did not care if you were popular or not, he did not care if you were a"punk" or and "normal" person. He took the time to make an effort to talk to you and become your friend. I can remember when I first meet Paul.
It was the first week of being a Duluth Central. I was standing at the top in the hall waiting for some friends of mine. He came up to me and introduced him self, and we talked about a number of things and from that day on we were friends.
Paul did this many people, some loved it others just were not the type to talk with people they did not know.
Paul always took the time to try to understand everyone. It was a great asset of his.
I can remember many times that Paul was talking to friends of his that were the (popular) kids and I would walk by and he would always make the effort to say hi to me. Many of the popular kids would wonder why he would talk to me. Paul would always reply everyone is important. No one should be left out. Paul was a very popular kid, yet you did not have to or want to be popular to be a friend of his.
Paul went the extra mile.
Paul there are many many people that miss you and love you to this day. We will never forget what happened.
Your spirit and hart will live on.

Time to recall Bergson update.
As you may re-call a month or two ago we had a post up about a web site being created to recall mayor Bergson. Here is that post,http://duluthpolitics.blogspot.com/2006/07/is-it-time-to-recall-bergson.html.
There still is no web site up and running to this day. It is becoming almost to late to do anything, to recall the mayor the process takes to long and by the time it was over and done we would be looking so little time left for mayor Bergson.
We believe at this point for now anyway that a recall can not be done.
I know in conversations with Mark we have said that the web page was the most important part to use as an informational tool.
We also are not sure that the Mayor has done anything to this point that would make recallable. You can always make an effort but it also may not be enforceable.

Fink needs to re-elected to first district county commissioner.
Mr. Fink has been working hard for the first district for the 12 years. He deserves to continue as our commissioner.

Hatch wrong.
Minnesota's DFL endorsed candidate for Governor is wrong yet again.
Mike Hatch is using an issue that is and should stay a federal issue to try to gain on Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
Stem Cell research is and should stay a federal issue. It is hard to believe that there are people that believe this should be a local, city, and yes state issue. It is simple to understand it should not be.

ST. PAUL - Funding for embryonic stem cell research -- a splintering issue among Republicans -- is playing an increasingly prominent role in the gubernatorial campaign of DFL candidate Mike Hatch.
In renewing a call to put $100 million in state money toward the budding research, Hatch and his allies worked Monday to portray Gov. Tim Pawlenty as indecisive on an issue where medical promise and moral concerns intersect.
"He has dodged and avoided this issue," Attorney General Hatch said of the Republican governor. "He keeps claiming this is a federal issue. It's not a federal issue. It's a state issue. We can advance here."
Mike Hatch is using an issue that is and should stay a federal issue to try to gain on Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.

Local talk show host and formor school board member Brad Bennett turns 60 today.

Mayor Bergson above the law?
I was going to post about the troubles that seem to be going on about the law suite against Mayor Bergson or lack there of. I however can't seem to find the paper and Erik over at www.almostontherange.blogspot.com said almost everything in his story of it. Check it out.
Swanson and Hatch.
It seems more and more like Hatch is in fact endorsing Swanson for Minnesota A.G.. In past conversations with many people the signs are at best questionable. Most of the democrats that are supporting other A.G. candidates don't like the signs being up together.
This may cause for some concern even in the DFL party. One democrat that has some power told Duluth politics that this just is not right. The signs should not be put up together. The signs make it look like Hatch is supporting Swanson.
Hatch has been known to do some things that his own party does not like. It seems now that this may just be one more of those type of events.

This may cause for some concern even in the DFL party. One democrat that has some power told Duluth politics that this just is not right. The signs should not be put up together. The signs make it look like Hatch is supporting Swanson.
Hatch has been known to do some things that his own party does not like. It seems now that this may just be one more of those type of events.

Sugar daddy's still in Duluth
Well it seems as if bad reports or not sugar daddy's strip club does not care. The DNT had a story a few days ago about the sign having troubles in Hermntown and also being driven around downtown Duluth. When driving around downtown many people have made comments that it should be driving around with kids all around.
They don't seem to care as yet again today I saw it a number of times well downtown. This is not only offensive to kids but it upsets many adults as well.

Okay so here is more on the Hatch and Swanson signs. I have now been told by a number of people that asked for Hatch signs that they got both Hatch and Swanson signs. Most of them did not want the Swanson sign.
A couple of people have been told they must have both signs to have a Hatch sign. Well yet one other person said he was told in an email from the Hatch campaing that he was to keep both signs.
These signs are still only in Duluth, I am beginning to wonder why this is only in Duluth? Is it because this is the only place they can get away with it?

Judge races.
Okay so here it is. The post about the judge races.
You may not like our thoughts on this, that is okay let us know. You may agree with us and again if you do let us know.
First it is very important to have good judges that serve us. With that said however. How many people really pay much if any attain to the judges. Why do you think we have the same ones time in and time out.
We here at DP have not affine even voted for judges. We will this time, and we will support Tim Little.
Again with that said however, we don't understand why so much time and money is put into a race like this. Little is having a meet and greet tonight and others have web pages,http://www.lacy4judge.com/. They also spend time with signs and such.
Why? When such a small amount of people vote for the judges. I guess it is hard to see spending such a large amount of money on this when no one seems to care.

Mixed in this week.
Just so you all know. I will have things from our trip this weekend to Indain mixed in with the normal issues this blog talks about.
Here is a start from the trip.
We went to there state fair. It was a lot of fun. The set up was much like our state fair and it was just as big. Just as many people as well.
There state fair had a lot to offer to people even if you were not from there. It was a blast. Hard to find a place to park however.
The Pics are some things that we recieved well at the fair. The map wich was very helpful to us. Hoosie honey gift shop. It was great if you like honey this was the place to be. They had this spread wich I bought a jar it was fruits mixed with honey. I got Strawberry and honey it is great stuff. They also had just honey and honey candy's. Along with ice cream that was very good as well. They also had candles and soaps and just things made out of bee's wax.
The BBQ place was some of the best I have ever had. They were giving away samples of the there bbq and it was great as well. They are a catering place in Indiana. They were also selling the sauce at the fair but we did not buy any. However I might off line later. There was so much to do there and I know we did not even see have of the fair area.

Gas and in store prices at gas stations in Indy.
Gas ranged any were from $2.89 to $3.02 a gallon. The in store prices were very close to the same as here. In fact most everything was the same price as here. There has a few things we don't have up here but not as much as I thought they would.

Downtown and canal park events part 2.
Now canal park talk. There really was not much different then any other summer day. Lots of people in the middle of the day.
People seemed to enjoy the shops in the canal. The carriage rides were going. My daughter saw her first horse. She loved him. Got a chance to pet him. The horse even gave her a kiss, and she did not freak out. It was cute.

Downtown and canal park events .
A couple of days ago I was out with my daughter. We went downtown and to canal park. Boy at just over a year old I she was beat when we finale got home. It is always fun to beable to spent time with your family.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I noticed a few things in both area of town.
One, the very first thing I saw as I got downtown was a big hummer hauling a trailer. Okay os what you ask? In the trailer was a sign for sugger daddy's gentalmens club. It was out driving around downtown from 3rd street down to superior street from the library past the norshor. No dout trying to take advance of the new norshor and wanted those partens to know about there club.
What is the issue with that? Simple people are complaining about the norshor. If you are going to whine about the norshor yet they don't advitse out side of the building. If you walked by well the doors were closed you would not know what was going on in there. Yet a truck drives by with a gentalsmens sign and no out cry. Get real people.
Second: I could not help to notice all people downtown. Yes there were a ton of people. Many were tourist and many were looking for shops to look around at. I said well you won't find much downtown to one couple that I talked with. I did say however take a look around and go in the canal there are some special shops there as well.
third: I made mentions of this already. Well downtown I talked with a guy that was upset about getting a Swanson for AG sign along with his Hatch for Governor Sign. He was not going to support Swanson and did not want it. He did not know who put it up or why they were together.

Despite losing the primary Lieberman will go on.
Joe Lieberman senator from Connecuit lost his primary yesterday. He vows to go on however as an independent.

Hours after losing his Democratic primary to an anti-war businessman, Sen. Joe Lieberman vowed to continue his run for a fourth term as an independent, saying Wednesday that he had to do it for the good of the country and no one could persuade him to drop out.
"I'll always take the calls of friends, but my mind is made up," Lieberman told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday. "I'm going forward. I'm going forward because I'm fed up with all the partisanship in Washington that stops us from getting anything done."
Asked if there was anyone who could call and get him to change his mind, Lieberman replied:
"Respectfully no. I'm committed to this campaign."
What are you thoughts? Should he continue to try to win his seat back? Do you believe the war was the biggest issue? Any other thoughts you may have a bout Joe.

Duluth City Councilor Don Ness will be the first guest on Duluth solutions byoc forum. He will be on Augest 23rd from noon to 1 in the afternoon.

Hatch Swanson sign update 2.
I had the oppertunity to chat with a Mike Hatch supporter. He told me that he just recieved his sign(s) a day or two ago. Note the the s in ().
He came home and saw the signs and he said he was not pleased. He never wanted a Swanson sign as that is not who is going to support of AG.
He took down the Swanson sign. It is clear to him that some one is putting up these signs with out even asking if they want both of them.
The question has to be who and why? There are also so many other questions.

Well the Hatch and Swanson signs continue to pop up around town. I still have not hurt of these signs being put any were else in the State.
The signs apprear to be joint together by plastic holders. The fact is however that this most be an effort on some ones part to run these to with each other.
Why do I say that? Many places these signs are located there is plenty of room for two separate signs. There is no need to stack them on top of each other.
The many question still remain. We are still looking into this to see if we can't find out more on the issue. Some one wants to at very least make it look like Hatch and Swanson are endorsing each other.

What will lawmakers tax or ban next? Recycling? Hair dryers?

Swim at your own risk.
As you may have noticed the Duluth News tribune had an article about the pollution in our swimming areas. Many areas that people like to swim that are not designated swimming spots are not tested do to funding.
Yet they would be posted no swimming if they were tested. Not only that but those spots that are designated swimming spots lately have been testing positive and marked no swimming or to use caution.
When I was little this would have never been a concern what has happened? In fact this has not seemed to be an issue up tell about four or five years ago.
Is this issue of great concern to you if so why? Do you pay attion to the warning when you are going to take your family out to these swim areas?
What has happened that these swimming areas are now affine so polluted?

This after a judge ruled that they could open as this type of a bussiness. Yes I believe it was the right ruling by the judge. I have no problem with this type of bussiness. I in fact think that state did a huge dis-service to the citizens by passing the law they did. The law did not allow these types of businesses to lacate so close to schools,churches,or areas that people lived. The only place I really agree with is schools otherewise there should be no othere restrictions.
The fact is clear go if you like, don't go it if you don't. They will not around long if no one goes.

Between 8 and 9 p.m., only one dancer performed. For perhaps 20 minutes, she danced topless but did not remove her G-string bottom. Five men and one woman sat in the sunken performance area on the theater's upper floor to watch her.Occasionally, three of the men walked to the stage andoffered the dancer money, but otherwise the scene was far from rowdy.
After performing to songs including "Maria Maria" by Carlos Santana and "Closing Time" by Semisonic, the dancer donned a pink negligee and walked around the bar, chatting with patrons.
Saturday as my wife and I walked by on our way to a wedding receptions at the greysolon ball room it did not seem like there were many people there either.

I don't know if you have noticed the signs for the companies of Hatch for Governor and SWanson for AG.
I think you should do a story on this, it is interesting to see these signs together. I don't believe that is by chance it is very clear it is intental. With that come many questions.

Is this not what a candidate is supose to do? Walk door to door and see what it is the people want. That is something Huntly has not done for some time.

House District 7A candidate Becky Hall on Monday begins a walking tour of the eastern Duluth district to find out what people want from their representative in St. Paul.
Hall, a Republican, is running against incumbent DFLer Tom Huntley.
In a Thursday news release, Hall said her "Put Hall in the House" tour is aimed at showing citizens that she will "walk the walk," if elected. Her goal by Nov. 6 is to take a million steps. Hall will use a pedometer to measure her mileage. A kickoff for the tour is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at Sir Benedict's, 805 E. Superior St.

When I first saw this sign I thought well it is just two signs posted together. Then when I saw more and more of them it became very clear that this was not the case. If you look close at the signs you can tell that this is a joint effert on behalf of these two campiangs of Mike Hatch and Lori Swanson.
One blogger things it is not but if you stop and look at the signs you can tell it clearly is.

Minnesota EBT questions.
Here are a few questions I have maybe it will make me understand the system more. As I have said many times before I am not in favor of it.
1. Why should people be allowed to buy cigs off EBT?
2. Should there be limits to what one can buy? If so what are they? If not why?
3. Is the system aimed at minorities? Is it harder for a white man to get it? If so why?

Puppies lost to mad man.
It is amazing how sad this story is. These dogs did not stand a chance because they were not pure bred. This is a very sick man.

St. Paul police are looking for a man who they say snapped the necks of 10 puppies Tuesday night.
Officers were called at about 5:30 p.m. to 300 Johnson Parkway after witnesses reported that a man was killing puppies and throwing them into a garbage bin, according to a police report.
"Upon our arrival we were met by two crying witnesses who told us they had witnessed a man break the necks of several live puppies and throw their lifeless bodies into a Dumpster," the report said.
Officers found 10 puppies in the Dumpster, who had apparently been newly delivered and were part of the same litter, said Tom Walsh, police spokesman. The trash bin is located outside an apartment building, but police said they don't believe the man lives there.
The man was gone when police arrived. A witness told police the man may have been upset because the puppies weren't pure bred. The puppies were a pit bull mix, Walsh said.

Green Man stripper in poor taste
I attended the Green Man Festival this month ("Green all over," July 16), thoroughly enjoying the excellent music of Cloud Cult, along with a handful of other people. I was pleased to support an environmentally friendly event that I expected would promote respect for the planet and for each other.
I felt bad, though, about the poor attendance -- until one act came on: An adult-entertainment strip show. How inappropriate for a family event. Why would event organizers choose entertainment that disrespects and objectifies women to represent green values?
I'm deeply saddened that one of our most visible local events, which promotes respecting the Earth rather than exploiting her, also endorses behaviors that disrespect and exploit women -- all in the context of family entertainment.

Green Man stripper in poor taste
I attended the Green Man Festival this month ("Green all over," July 16), thoroughly enjoying the excellent music of Cloud Cult, along with a handful of other people. I was pleased to support an environmentally friendly event that I expected would promote respect for the planet and for each other.
I felt bad, though, about the poor attendance -- until one act came on: An adult-entertainment strip show. How inappropriate for a family event. Why would event organizers choose entertainment that disrespects and objectifies women to represent green values?
I'm deeply saddened that one of our most visible local events, which promotes respecting the Earth rather than exploiting her, also endorses behaviors that disrespect and exploit women -- all in the context of family entertainment.

Post coming tonight
Hi all we are very grateful that you take the time to read our blog. Sorry for not posting as of late. There has been a couple of issues behind this.
Work has consumed most of the time. As you may remember we umpire youth softball and it has been playoff week this week so almost every night we have been doing that. Durning the day it is our regular jobs. Softball come to a close this weekend at wade stadiums softball Fields. If you have nothing to do come and watch these kids play.
The other is issue is there has not been a lot of news this last week or so. Yes it is has been filled with the health care issue facing Duluth but we wanted to let that "go" for now. We will however have a few thoughts on that. Therefore up tell yesterday there was not a lot to comment on but now there are few things we want to and hope to tonight and tomorrow so check back.

BWCA fires
The fire in the BWCA seems to still be the big story. They did see a little relief yesterday as they got some rain. This helped with the fire, but it continues to cause big problems.

Notes.
There has not been a lot of news. There for not many post this week.
The big story is the fire in the BWCA. We all knew that there was going to one day be the "big one" from the blow down a number of years ago now. It has come this is it. We wish the best for that area.
The other reason there has not been many post is we at DP have been very busy with softball as the season is coming to an end. Playoffs start this next week with the big wrap up Saturday and Sunday at wade staduims softball fields. Come out and watch some great softball that weekend then go to the Huskies.

One name of note on the AG race.
Former Governor hopeful Steve Kelley has entered the AG race. If I was to vote for a DFLer it would be him .
The AG race is wide open.
Matt Entenza dropped out of the race yesterday. It was because of troubles with him and Mike Hatch. We have not followed this very close but there are other blogs that have. Here is one to read a lot on the issue, http://minnesotademocratsexposed.com.
We do however have some thoughts on this, it seems much like a heavy weight fight between two high power Minnesota DFLers. Mike Hatch the ever big bully wins again. With Entenza out it clears the way for the Hatch camp to do what it wants to. Hatch has bullied his way into and threw out his political carrier.
With that said I also tend to agree with Chris over at http://duluthsolutions.com. He believes that Entenza is a arrogant jerk read what he said at Duluth solutions by clicking the link.

Crime
We here at Duluth Politics will be getting the email updates from the Duluth Police. Our first one came today.
There were three incidents reported on it this time. Two had to deal with guns and one a fire. Both the of the reports dealing with the guns the people were drunk. On was earlier at like 7 or 8 at night, the other close to 11 pm. The two were near the downtown area.
The other was a car fire believed to arson.

Kdal radio has canceled fightline. The new host was informed by a letter taped to the studio. Sounds like the way our Mayor fired Winson.

The ACLU is wacked
The wack job organization is at it yet again. We can't do this we don't do that. Now they don't want english translation on signs. Remember we a in America after all. Should you not know how to speak english first?

Mayor Bergson when asked why he left said he had another event to go to. He also added that he did not feel that the negations were going well enough.
Fist Mayor you were only there for an hour. Yes that is right just one hour. That is about the time a family spends in a restraunt to eat supper. This simple is not time to accomplish anything. You showed that you were not even willing to bargain before you cry foul.
Lets get back to the Mayor having another event to attend. When asked by Duluth News Tribune the city administrator said the mayor had no more meeting for the night.

This mayor is a complete embarrassment to the city.

Duluth firefighters union members said a meeting Thursday in which they expected a tentative contract agreement instead ended in an impasse after Mayor Herb Bergson walked out.
The Mayor did say he did not think that the agreement saved enough money on the retiree health care side. However should the Mayor have not stayed and tried to work it out more instead of just taking his ball and going home? What a baby!!!!!

Is it time to recall Bergson?
At least one Duluthains feels he should be. I know with talking with many people there are also others that feel that way. I once and still short of do feel that a recall should take place.
I do not agree with a recall 100% like I did before Bergson decided not to run for re-election. With that said I would be more then willing to listen to this citizens view on why he should be recalled, to see if I would support a recall whole heartily again.
Here is a view point he wrote in the paper yesterday.

As much as I enjoy debating the finer points of Herb Bergson's term as Duluth mayor, I've had enough. The man has made some decisions in both his public life and private life that do not represent the best interests of Duluth's citizens or of our fine city.
He has well over a year left in his term as mayor, and I do not wish to have him to continue in that capacity.
As a registered voter and resident of the city, I and others of like mind have the right to ask for a recall election to remove Bergson from office and to replace him with a candidate who could complete his term. The process is clearly laid out and explained in the city's legislative code.
If you're a Duluth resident and a registered voter and you feel the mayor has worn out his welcome, let's take action.
