Topeka,KS just announced that they are changing their name to Google, KS in their attempt to get Google Fiber. Kind of makes our little petition thingy seem pretty weak, huh?
No not at all. Changing your name is lame. Mayor Ness jumped in Lake Superior in the name of bringing google fiber to Duluth. Duluth has so much more to offer google then Topeka KS does.
We do? I've spent plenty of time in Topeka (since I lived in Wichita for a year). Explain what specifically Duluth has more to offer over Topeka.
Don't get me wrong here. I would love for this to come to Duluth and I was one of the first people to fill out the Google form requesting it. However, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in the effort to bring it here. It's all been very weak, disjointed, and unfocused.
Understand that nameing your city Google mean nothing. Understand that every community that wants this is doing the same process.
The process is what is important not all the fake stuff.
Why must you be so negitive about everything?
Who?
You, Danny this is a perfect fit for Duluth. I think the group is working hard to convince google to come here.
We have a great workforce, we have a great place to live and work a caring community. We also offer a setting second to none.
Google would be foolish to not set up a test site here, I believe they will.
They say they are setting up one or more test sites and I think there will be a number of sites. They will be small and large cities.
I agree with everything you said and I support Google Fiber coming here. How does that make me negative?
I was saying (quite plainly) that I think the effort by the folks trying to bring it here has been weak, however. A fact you haven't denied. I'm dissappointed in the effort because I not only want it here, but I also think it's a good fit.
Also...you still haven't answered what Duluth has over Topeka.
There is no way google is going to pick a city in Kansas. Duluth's weather might suck, but it is not a city of people who don't believe in evolution. Kansas is nowhere! Duluth is 140 miles from somewhere -- the Twin Cities. I think Duluth winning will be a long-shot. However, I can see how a hip google employee from California could have fun in Duluth, but getting sent to Kansas would probably suck. Kansas is also not very gay friendly.
Christopher Swanson's efforts are not at all lame. I think he is doing a credible job and hopefully it will pay off, but I am afraid that when the choice is made it will be a city that enjoys better weather.
Tony:
I am sick of people tieing Duluth to the ciites. Duluth has a lot to offer, by it's self. We are mid-sized city that has a great work force, the lake and other natural buety.
Yes we have four season's, I don't view that as a bad thing. In this case I think it is in fact a possitive. It will test workability of google fiber in all eliments.
The gay comment I don't get. I am not sure what it has to do with getting google fiber. Yes Topeka is a whacked out city that has Rev. Phelps (sp). Is it possible that means something to google? Should it? I guess it should to have some goof like that.
I am proud of Duluth. I am glad we accept all people. I am just not sure that plays in this decision.
John, I didn't mean to knock Duluth, but some people occasionally need a big city fix -- restaurants, major sports, museums or entertainment. Duluth is a beautiful place, and I think it is a plus that you can drive to a major metropolitan area in a little over two hours.
As far as the gay thing goes, I believe Google gives benefits to same-sex partners. Therefore, I doubt they would send employees to an area that is openly hostile to homosexuals. Duluth has a reputation of being gay friendly, which will make it more attractive to Google.
Tony you are correct that some people do need the big city fix. I guess my only thought is that far to offen people try to tie us to the mess that is the twin cities.
Well I enjoy being just a couple hours from a major city I would not want to live in the mess. I think we need to focus on our positives and work with those.
You would be correct with the google point. I think that could be another plus on our site.
Danny I think that so called fact that the effort is lame is wrong, dead wrong. The group of people working on this effort has been good.
I don't buy into stunts well they maybe fun, I am not sure they do much. I must say however the latest one by use is pretty funny. I think it makes more fun of our way of life up here then it does Kanas, in party why I think it is classic.
I did say what we have that they don't. Our workforce (those that choice to work) are second to none. Duluth is one of the most buetiful cities in the country, I love that it has four season's.
